Q: Who may Join?
A: The Association shall have four classes of membership, Regular, Associate, Honorary and Lifetime. Regular, Associate and Lifetime Members shall have equal voting rights, interests and privileges. Honorary members shall have no voting rights. Honorary and Associate members shall not be entitled to hold office, but shall enjoy other privileges. No member of any class shall have any interest or property right in the assets of the Association and no member shall hold more than one membership in the Association. All member classes are required to adhere to the regulations as set forth in the by-laws.
 
Regular Member: shall be any full-time employee or retired employee (who was an active member at the time of retirement) from the following categories:
      • Law Enforcement Officers
      • Probation/Parole
      • Corrections Officers
      • Juvenile Justice Professionals (Detention, Residential, Law Enforcement, Probation)
      • Prosecuting Attorneys
      • Judges/Judicial Assistants
      • Criminal Analysts/Evidence Technicians for a Law Enforcement Agency
      • School Resource Officers
      • Any other person deemed appropriate for membership by the NYGIA Board of Directors
 
We pride ourselves on establishing the Associate Membership category as we believe that to fully address the gang issue you must bring all stakeholders to the table.
 
Associate Member: Any individual who exhibits an interest in preventing gang activity, whose talents and interests can be of benefit to the NYGIA.  Associate Members are voting members and are required to adhere to the regulations of Regular Members as set forth in the by-laws.

      • Principals/Deans
      • School Security Personnel
      • Teachers
      • Counselors
      • Social Workers
      • Psychologists
      • Victim Advocates
      • Any other person deemed appropriate for membership by the NYGIA Board of Directors
Honorary Member: Any individual who has assisted in the betterment of the Association, and with the approval of the Board of Directors can become an Honorary Member. Honorary Members are non-voting members and are required to adhere to the regulations as set forth in the by-laws.
 
Lifetime Member: shall be conferred upon all past NYGIA Board of Directors to include the President, Vice President(s), Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant at Arms, Regional Directors and each department appointed Directors. Lifetime Members are voting members and are required to adhere to the regulations of Regular Members as set forth in the by-laws.
 
Q: What are the benefits of joining the NYGIA?
A: Private information sharing and networking website, newsletter, discounted annual conference fee, and valuable contacts throughout the state.
 
Q: How much does it cost to join the NYGIA?
A: Annual fee of $20.00 for Regular Members, $15.00 for Associate Members.
 
Q: Do I have to be from New York to join the NYGIA?
A: No, members are accepted throughout the U.S.
 
Q: Who should I contact if I need assistance or have further questions about the NYGIA?

Q: Can I attend the Annual NYGIA Training Conference if I am not an NYGIA member?
A: Yes, the conference fee includes a one year membership.
 
Q: What topics are discussed by the NYGIA members?
A: Street gang identification and awareness issues, gang prevention, intervention and suppression, gang trends, gang training and education issues, bullying prevention, and other youth violence related issues and topics.
 
Q: Is the information exchanged on the NYGIA discussion forum confidential and secure?
A: The members only area is password protected and monitored. When posting a message or sharing information all NYGIA members have access to that posted information. The information and photographs shared are sent via e-mail to our members and to increase security the NYGIA messages contain no case sensitive information, no facial photographs, no specific pedigree information. The NYGIA takes all possible measures to secure our members information.  According to Federal Law, information considered "Law Enforcement Sensitive" or "Confidential" can only be disseminated to those sworn/certified members of Criminal Justice Agencies, therefore, LEOs can send information to list manager at nygiamanagers@gmail.com for dissemination to other LEOs.
 
Q: Can I be an active member of the NYGIA as well as a member of other Gang Investigator Associations?

A: Absolutely, we encourage that you are.
